The Kingdom is Swaziland is a mountainous country in Southern Africa and the smallest in the Southern hemisphere. A truly royal experience, Swaziland is one of the last remaining monarchies in Africa. This land, far far away from my home in New York City, boasts an authentic African experience at an affordable price. I decided to arrange some adventures while traveling through Swaziland for the chance to experience the beauty of its nature and culture.

When contemplating a trip to Swaziland, keep in mind that most of the country lacks running water or flushing toilets. So, if your idea of an enriching experience is defined by luxury rather than culture, you might want to brainstorm other destinations. Swaziland is an adventurer’s paradise: climb breathtaking mountains, zip from tree to tree on a canopy tour or shop at some of the many local handcraft shops and markets. There are many interesting places to stay in the kingdom, from a traditional Zulu beehive hut to a colonial mansion. Both can be found situated in Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, a game reserve located in the Ezuwini Valley, or Valley of Heaven.

At Mlilwane, hippopotamus, zebra and kudo roam freely and so can you. Hike, bike, ride a horse or drive along the trails without a guide, as there are no predators to worry about at this reserve. Here you can order a “bush braai” at the main restaurant, Hippo Haunt, and dine on all the wild game frocking though the park.

For a more upscale, venturesome experience head up to Big Bend and stay at Mkhaya Game Reserve, which boasts 360 degree open thatched huts, and the best chance in all of Africa to catch a glimpse of the elusive endangered black rhino. Aside from the unique accommodations, Mkhaya offers a more traditional safari experience with two daily game drives. The afternoon adventure is a walking safari where you can observe these endangered prehistoric-looking creatures very up close.

Swaziland is known for outdoor activities, like its self-guided hiking trails. Execution Rock, formerly where criminals were executed by being thrown off this summit, is much more welcoming now and hosts enjoyable hikes for all levels. If you want the same picturesque mountain views but more adventure, opt for the canopy tour, where you swing from eleven platforms inside the dramatic peaks of the Malolotja mountains.

The many handmade craft companies of Swaziland create stunning, high quality, products using traditional techniques and organic materials. These companies support the community by providing jobs to woman in the surrounding area. Many of these women’s lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS; Swaziland has the world’s highest infection rate. Your heartfelt purchase supports these women and their community, and coming home with a one of a kind keepsake is the perfect way to remember your adventure!
