Joy’s Camp, Shaba Reserve, Kenya

I have always suffered from the “no filter”.  Growing up, one of my dearest friends (Abbey) who shares my inability to hold back her thoughts and I began to keep track of the amazing quotes we heard at school, in shows and later traveling.  They serve as excellent memories later to accompany your photography.  Here are few of my favorites from the trip to Africa thus far.

“You know what I think, nature makes me sick.”  My grandmother Dee-Dee in reference to  camping Africa.

“What’s the point of unsexy safari gear if you still get bush legs?”  Friend via email, referring to the purpose of zip-off pants when my legs are covered in mosquito bites and scratches from the “wait a bit thorns” at Joy’s Camp.

Awesome zip-off pants and the bug proof shirt– HOT. Just post the “wait-a-bit” thorns wrapping around my right ankle.

“Mick, you’ll be outside for two months,” Muriel Truter, owner of Askari Travel in reference to my needing to splurge for a pair of polarized sunglasses.

A conversation between William, my guide on safari at Joy’s Camp and I over the rumbling engine of the Land Cruiser:

William:  “Look!  A velvet faced monkey.”

Me: “A what?”

William: “A velvet faced monkey, they have blue balls.”

Me: “I’m sorry?”

William: “He has a blue scrotum.  You know, blue balls?”

Me: “Right.”

Velvet faced monkey.

For the record, they do in fact have a blue scrotum which you can see when they run away.
