Holiday Gift Guide for the Avid Traveler
A great weekender bag or everyday travel purse, like the ones featured above by M0185.
It’s the traveler in your life who seems to have it all. They look stylish. They have all the latest gadgets and techie toys. They have their tried and true products. And when leaving for a trip, they seem oh-so-together and prepared. But are they really? And if so, what do you get them for their holiday gift this year?
As an avid traveler myself, here’s my holiday wish list (plus a couple must-have items that already own or have sampled):
1. A luxurious travel wallet/clutch. Smythson’s Chameleon Zip Around Travel Wallet is a splurge indeed at $710, but it’s high quality and will last for years. Two pockets, a change holder in the middle, and a special passport holder make it the ideal clutch while traveling to keep currency separate and all identification, boarding cards, and credit cards in one place for easy access. Although, hot tip — when traveling internationally, I always lock my passport in the safe in the room or store it at the hotel front desk for safekeeping unless I know I’ll be needing it while out.
2. Passport holder. I’ve never really understood these, nor used them. I use a plastic carry badge holder that I can wear around my neck because it’s practical and travel isn’t about making a fashion statement. But I can tell you that if I received a really nice one like the classy kinds you can find at Montblanc or the colorful Mara-inspired ones at Smythson, I’d use it proudly.
3. Stylish watch. I don’t wear one, and the reason why is that I’ve never really found one that I love and that can be dressed up or down, and used no matter what I’m doing. I tend to be rather active and adventurous, so watches need to be durable. This one from IWC is actually for men, but I love it. Their vintage and pilot’s collection is exactly what I’m talking about and most are water resistant at 120 meters (400 feet). The key for me when it comes to watches is simple — it needs to be vintage-looking and artistic because as far as I’m concerned, it’s not about telling time (that’s what cell phones are for!) — it’s a modified bracelet. Another option for a USA-made brand? Bozeman Watch Company. Their Sky Raider line is terrific.
4. GoPro Hero3. Assuming your avid traveler already has a camera they love (if they don’t, nothing beats the Canon Powershot brand for a small handheld), GoPro is where it’s at! The audio isn’t fantastic — I have a Hero2 and have heard Hero3 is a bit better — but the footage is second to none. Even though I have one, I’d always love getting more fun accessories and gadgets to go with it, or even an upgrade to the latest model so a GoPro gift card is another option.
5. A stocked toiletry kit. They may not be the most stylish, but they are the most practical I’ve found when it comes to toiletry kits. You can spend a bundle on a high-end leather case, but it’s going to be heavy and you’re not going to find all your items quickly in one large compartment. One that hangs and has individual compartments for toiletries of all sizes is the way to go. The reason for hanging is simple – you can put it anywhere – a small washroom in a public place where you need to freshen up while on the go, in an airplane lavatory, and in your hotel bathroom on the back of the door to save counter space if you need to. I love this one from REI. A great gift would be one of these already stocked with the essentials in travel sizes — moisturizer, lip balm, sunblock, cleanser and refreshing tonic, toothpaste and brush, hair products, Q-tips, and meds like advil, immodium, emergen-c, and my favorite — grapefruit seed oil.
6. A great weekender bag or everyday travel purse. The avid traveler knows what they want and need in terms of luggage. What they probably don’t have is a terrific and trustworthy weekender bag or everyday purse to use while traveling. You need something that’s large enough for cameras, maps, phones, chargers, light toiletries like sunblock, and maybe an iPad, but small enough that you’re not carrying around an actual piece of luggage. My absolute favorite for bags and purses of all kinds is a brand out of Montreal called M0185, that I was once introduced to by a friend who knows travel well – she works with none other than Sir Richard Branson.
7. An electronics package. When I travel, especially abroad, I bring with me a whole bag of electronic gadgets — this means, plugs that convert one plug into three so I can charge all my devices at once even if only one socket is available (in the airport terminal, at a restaurant, etc.). International electrical adapters — Brookstone‘s are the best. And the FatCat has become my new best friend. They are ingenious when it comes to needing to charge your phone on the go when no power is available. If only they had these for laptops!
8. A good quality cashmere wrap or scarf. These are both stylish and practical. I have many scarves and wear them everywhere. Great for keeping warm on the plane, to wrap around you if it’s windy, to cover your head, and even to secure your luggage for a moment as I’ve done when my purse zipper broke. Style comes down to personal preference. I’m on a Bedouin kick right now — I like the bright colors, uneven lines, and fringe — but they’re tough to find. AllSaints out of London used to carry them, but it appears they’re out. If you’d like to spend a bit more, but know you are giving back, check out Zaanha for a mixture of solids and prints all from the finest textiles. Most items are sourced from local women in Central Asia and a portion of proceeds go to sending poor Afghan children to private schools.
9. Good earphones. I must have twelve pairs and none are perfect — some hurt my ears after awhile, some fall out, and some have horrible sound quality. I’ve heard Flight001’s Urbanears are great because they’re small and each earpiece snaps together, allowing you to carry them around your neck when not in use, which is super convenient so you don’t lose them on your walk to the airplane lavatory. All parents should carry several with them — if we adults wear earphones while on our laptops, iPads, and movie players, so too should your kids be wearing earphones inflight while playing video games as a courtesy to the other passengers!
10. A giftcard or credit to print photos. Sounds archaic right? We are so deep in the digital age that no one prints photos anymore. But avid travelers are often great photographers too. For an artful twist and to offer encouragement to get that favorite pic printed and hung in your home, try a service like CanvasPop for photos to be printed on canvas or WoodSnap to get your memories printed on wood.
Happy Shopping! And one final note — I make it my personal mission to shop local no matter where I am in the world, which means that some of the above items go against my personal policy. My shopping this year will consist of Made in the USA products, however it’s the holidays, and to me that’s as good an excuse as any to break the rules a bit and splurge on a luxury.
