Santa Monica, California may give off the West Coast cool vibe and it’s residents are beach town chill, but the city has plenty to offer. We were well-fed, stayed in hotels that ranged from beachy cool to 5-star luxury. And as sun deprived East Coasters, we investigated our favorite pool scenes and the beaches.  Here are our favorite places to eat, drink, stay & swim.

Where to eat and drink:

Dining alfresco

Dining alfresco at Gjelina in Venice.

  • Tar & Roses: Nuevo American on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and 6th Street. Locals and tourists alike know about the tasty sustainable and organic menu here so don’t forget to make a reservation. This wood-fired oven is a popular one.

  • Huckleberry Bakery and Cafe: A casual bakery café with a full menu. The husband-and-wife operation has an at-home feel with everything made on-site.

Come as you are. All are welcome to be a fellow misfit at this casual bistro.

Come as you are. All are welcome to be a fellow misfit at this casual bistro.

  • The Misfit Bar: The décor insinuates French bistro, but as in most things southern Cali, the menu boasts Ahi Tuna Burgers and Kale Salads- the food is fresh and boasts a well designed drink menu.

  • Mercado: for delicious and chic Mexican, visit Mercado. The upscale atmosphere is infused with authentic Mexican flavor. And if you like tequila, you’re in luck. There are over 70 kinds to choose from.

  • Gjelina, an ideal brunch spot on Abbot Kenny Boulevard in Venice (a 12 minute drive from Santa Monica). The hefty menu of breakfast plates, salads and pizzas ensures everyone will find something they like.

Hotels to drink at (you could sleep there too):

White wine and Pacific sunsets

White wine and Pacific sunsets from the deck at Shutters on the Beach.

  • Shutters: For sunset drinks, visit Shutters on the Beach, the name says it all, a 5-star hotel literally, on the beach.
  • Fairmont Bungalow: The luxury property is a great place to stay in Santa Monica, but also ideal for afternoon drinks that last until 2am when the bar closes. Reservations can only be made for bottle service.

  • Penthouse: The sceny rooftop at The Huntley Hotel is a fun evening destination for cocktails and dancing. Reservations recommended.

Where to stay & our favorite pool scenes:

  • Hotel Shangri-LA: A boutique hotel with an Art Deco style. And the location couldn’t be better; overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica Pier. Great pool scene in the courtyard, but the service is slow.
  • Oceana Beach Club Hotel: The new epitome of California luxury, with great views of the palm trees and breaking waves outside your room. Check out a complimentary beach cruiser for a sunset bicycle ride. The restaurant and pool scene are standouts.
  • Hotel Palomar: A Kimpton boutique hotel in Westwood with chic style and modern design. The outdoor fireplaces at the pool allow you to swim into the night. The surrounding Westwood neighborhood has spots to dine and boutiques to shop just a step outside the hotel.

The Georgian Hotel

Cool blue facade and gold detailing: reminiscent of Mr. Gatsby.

  • The Georgian Hotel: Flashback to the glamour and glitz of old Hollywood. Stay here for an immersion into vintage Santa Monica. The Georgian has been a go-to hang out since prohibition. Speaking of, don’t miss a drink or two in the speakeasy.
What to do:

The Santa Monica Pier

The Santa Monica Pier.

  • The pier a quintessential destination. First time visitors must experience the attractions. Wonder from your hotel to the Santa Monica Pier for some food cart eats and festive fun. Think Trapeze school, aquarium, and ferris wheel.

The canals of Venice, California

The canals of Venice, California: colorful boats and lush greenery.

  • We enjoyed a day strolling along the Venice boardwalk and canals. On a cooler day during your trip when you don’t think it’s quite warm enough for a bikini, throw on a denim jacket and enjoy the beautifully landscaped waterways.
  • The beach, obviously. What would a trip to Santa Monica, California be without at least one beach day? Soaking up the sun is a must. Take a water’s edge walk at dusk and watch the sun settle below the Pacific.
  • You can also run or rent bikes all along the boardwalk.
