When you think of Africa, most people picture safari’s and the big five, but for those seeking a slightly more unique adventure, look no further than the deserts of Namibia and South Africa.

The Namib and Kalahari deserts in Southern Africa couldn’t be more different in terms of landscape. But they share something in common–both are teeming with life.

Our trip began in the northwest of Namibia in the region known as Damaraland. Formed when South America and Africa were still joined as one. This rugged outcrop of land is estimated to be over one billion years old.

And to better understand the recent evolution of the local people, we visited a living history museum to learn more about Damara cultural heritage and later visited a modern village to experience their current way of life.

But this being Africa, we had to see what wildlife there was to encounter. During our game drives we spotted desert adapted elephant, giraffe, baboons, ostrich, springbok and the national animal, the oryx.
