MICHAELA’S MAP: RWANDA

Posted on July 19, 2018 by MichaelaSGuzy

MICHAELA’S MAP is back folks, just in time for OhThePeopleYouMeet’s 10th Anniversary! To give you context, the OTPYM team + I were “planning” to release season one of our reimagined award winning series: MICHAELA’S MAP focusing on travel + human connection in late March of 2020. As the pandemic rolled across the globe, closing borders + literally keeping us apart from one another, we decided to hit pause.

Like everyone, we had to pivot to remain relevant. We took this time to re-edit our MICHAELA’S MAP episodes to include live interviews with travel experts that can help you go safely, to launch our new “viral shows” InspirationStation and Sleeping Around Safely + triple the size of our global online community! In the weirdest of ways, the pandemic only made the content that OTPYM Productions create more relevant. Our exclusive series MICHAELA’S MAP shifts the traditional show model from host to curator, in order to empower our local hosts and promote inclusivity. Each episode, I curate who you are supposed to meet when traveling — from local chefs, artists and designers, sustainable tour operators, hoteliers supporting their local communities, to OTPYM’s award winning film featuring the legendary Dr. Jane Goodall in Sierra Leone. Our focus is how to go sustainably + who to know when you are there. At OTPYM we introduce you to people from across the globe who are happy to share their pop-culture, music, art, design, food + ultimately their home with you. We are so excited to share the first episode of our newly reimagined series on one of our favorite destinations – RWANDA!

This episode is chocked full of people, places + purposes that you MUST experience for yourself. The country known best known for it’s gorilla population and world class coffee has recently experienced a genocide killing over a million people, and yet, when you speak with the local people, there is a sense of hope and unity that trickles down from the President to the residents of Rwanda. Join me, as we explore the vast and diverse beauty of the land of a 1,000 hills, Rwanda. We’ll meet local people working to conserve the country’s precious gorilla population, young genocide survivors creating sustainable employment for local women, even luxury hotels working to create sustainable opportunities within their surrounding communities, coffee growers and the people responsible for repopulating the BIG 5 Akagera National Park.

Stay tuned after the episode for an insider interview with an African travel specialist from Strong Travel, a Virtuoso agency, about how to go safely, sustainably and who can help you meet our cast of colorful local hosts!
