SLEEPING AROUND SAFELY: Zadar, Croatia
Can you guess where I’m SLEEPING AROUND SAFELY now?
In 1964, film director and screenwriter, Alfred Hitchcock famously said: “Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world, more beautiful than the one in Key West, Florida, applauded at every evening.”
Zadar sits 160 km North-West of Split and is the biggest city in Dalmatia. Zadar is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia and best known for its historic Old Town. There are well preserved Roman and Venetian ruins, surrounded by thick stone walls and four gates to enter. Whether you are into art, history, libations or cultural traditions, there is something to explore in Zadar. We met with local hosts that opened the new cruise terminal introducing travelers to local small businesses from across the Zadar region.
Get off the grid and on a boat into the salty Adriatic Sea. We sailed our way past many an island, into a cave where submarines hid during WWII and out to the historic island of Ist. For an island with only 50 inhabitants in the winter months, a lot is happening. We met with one archeologist who is working to uncover thousands of years of history including the discovery of ancient tools and Roman coins.
Croatian wine is just breaking into the world winemaking scene, partly due to limited production. Meet our local host from Kraljevskivinogradi who explains why it’s been limited until now.
Hitch a ride with rowing men of Zadar to learn about this 800-year-old tradition passed on from father to son, taking passengers on their way regardless of the weather.
